The Grande Albergo delle Rose occupies the northern tip of Rhodes, identified by the sprawling, colorful rose gardens that gave the landmark its name. Commissioned by Italian governor Mario Lago and opened in nineteen twenty-seven, the building was designed to revitalize the island’s tourism by blending Byzantine, Arabian, Ottoman, and Venetian architectural styles. In the nineteen thirties, it earned a reputation as the most luxurious hotel in the eastern Mediterranean, drawing elite travelers to its gates.
