Windmills of Rhodes

The three stone towers standing on the east mole of Mandraki Harbour are the surviving remnants of a much larger group of windmills that once defined this coastline. During the fourteenth century, the Knights Hospitaller oversaw the construction of as many as eighteen such mills along this breakwater, utilizing them to grind grain brought in by merchant ships. These cylindrical towers were built by Genoese prisoners, and in their active years, they served the dual purpose of processing flour for the local population and providing defensive structures integrated into the port's fortifications.
