Sea Gate

The Sea Gate, or Porta Marina, announces itself as a pair of massive, grey-stone cylindrical towers that flank a deep, arched passage. Built in fourteen seventy-eight under Grand Master Pierre d’Aubusson, the structure functions as the primary maritime entrance to the Old Town of Rhodes. Its design, heavily influenced by the Gate of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon in France, places the entrance on a narrow strip of land between the harbor and the city walls to prevent invaders from easily mounting an attack.
