Panayia Gate (Virgin Mary)

The Panayia Gate, or Virgin Mary Gate, stands out among the defensive walls of Rhodes as a modern insertion designed to allow vehicle traffic to pass into the Old Town. While the surrounding fortifications date back to the medieval era of the Knights Hospitaller, this gateway was planned by the Italian administration in the early twentieth century and officially opened by the Greek administration in nineteen fifty-five.
