The Jewish Museum of Rhodes sits within the thick-walled intimacy of the Kahal Shalom synagogue, which has stood in the Jewish Quarter of the old town since fifteen seventy-seven. You can identify the complex by the Star of David on its entrance door and the distinct, black-and-white pebble mosaic floor that covers the courtyard. As the oldest functioning synagogue in Greece, Kahal Shalom is a rare survivor; while four other synagogues once served this neighborhood, this is the only one that escaped the bombing of the second world war.
