Dísz tér is recognizable by the way it opens up as a wide, trapezoidal expanse at the southern entrance to the Buda Castle District, forming a transition point between the historic fortress and the rest of the city. Originally developed in the Middle Ages as a market place for the middle town, the square was later named for the military parades held here by the castle guard.
