Postal Savings Bank

The Postal Savings Bank, located at Hold utca four, is recognizable by the whimsical ceramic bees and beehives perched along its roofline. Designed by the architect Ödön Lechner and completed in nineteen oh one, the building was intended to represent a new, modern Hungarian architectural style. Lechner rejected the common practice of imitating Western European revival styles, choosing instead to blend traditional folk art motifs with a bold, creative sensibility that earned him the nickname of the Hungarian Gaudí.
