Schulek Staircase

The Schulek Staircase is recognizable by its wide, ceremonial stone steps that climb toward the white, neo-Romanesque arches of the Fisherman’s Bastion. Designed by the architect Frigyes Schulek and completed around nineteen hundred and two, this structure replaced a series of narrow, dark steps once known as the Jesuit stairs. While those older paths served a strictly functional purpose for people traveling between the castle district and the riverfront, Schulek’s redesign transformed the ascent into a grand, airy entrance intended to welcome visitors to the Buda Castle quarter.
