The National Museum of Iceland sits at forty-one Suðurgata Street, easily identified by its functional, modernist architecture designed by Sigurður Guðmundsson. Established on February twenty-fourth, eighteen sixty-three, the museum began as a modest collection of antiquities stored in various attics across Reykjavík. For decades, many of the nation's most precious historical artifacts were actually kept in Denmark, far from the island they originated from.
