The National Theatre of Iceland, known locally as Þjóðleikhúsið, stands out for its dark, textured facade of crushed obsidian, quartz, and silver berg. Architect Guðjón Samúelsson created this distinct, art-deco-inspired exterior by inventing a specialized concrete coating, meant to mirror the mythical elf palaces hidden within giant Icelandic rocks. This building serves as the country’s first purpose-built home for the performing arts, designed to transport audiences into a world of color and music.
