The Settlement Exhibition is built directly around the remains of a tenth-century Viking longhouse, discovered by accident in two thousand one during construction work on Aðalstræti. This site is significant because it rests on the very spot where early sagas claim Ingólfr Arnarson, the first permanent settler of Iceland, established his farm in the year eight hundred seventy-four.
