Pandit Kishan Maharaj was a world-renowned tabla master who lived and taught in this neighborhood of Kabir Chaura. Born here in nineteen twenty-three on the day of the Krishna Janmashtami festival, he emerged from a family of professional musicians to become a defining figure of the Benares Gharana. His home in this area became a hub for the traditional percussion style known for its resonant strokes and complex rhythmic calculations.
