Between eighteen sixty-nine and eighteen ninety-nine, the neighborhood of Akashicho was the site of the Tsukiji Foreign Settlement. You can identify the area today by the presence of St. Luke’s International Hospital, which remains the most prominent successor to the institutions established during that era. While other treaty ports like Yokohama developed into bustling centers of international trade, this enclave on the banks of the Sumida River became an unlikely hub for medicine, education, and the introduction of Western culture to Japan.
