Tsukiji Hongwan-ji Temple

Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple is recognizable by its heavy, stone-like concrete exterior and the massive rounded roof modeled after the leaf of a sacred Bodhi tree. Unlike the traditional wooden temples found throughout Japan, this structure draws its primary visual language from ancient Indian and South Asian architecture. The facade is marked by a prominent lotus flower motif, while the surrounding walls and eaves are adorned with intricate, unexpected carvings of winged lions, elephants, and mythical creatures.
