A small stone marker stands in front of the Tiffany flagship store in Ginza two-chome. Known as the Origin of Ginza Monument, this pillar commemorates the district’s roots as the location of a silver mint established in sixteen twelve by the Tokugawa shogunate. While the modern neighborhood is celebrated for high-end commerce and global fashion, the site marks where the name Ginza—meaning silver seat or guild—originated when the government moved its minting operations here from Shizuoka.
