Plaza Manuel Gamio

Plaza Manuel Gamio sits as a quiet, open space squeezed between the towering walls of the Metropolitan Cathedral and the sprawling Templo Mayor archaeological site. You can recognize this square by the constant presence of traditional dancers in feathered regalia performing amidst the city’s historic center. The plaza is named for the archaeologist Manuel Gamio, who in nineteen thirteen conducted the first scientific excavations here. His work was groundbreaking because it finally uncovered a corner of the Templo Mayor, proving the ancient Aztec ceremonial heart remained buried beneath the colonial city.
