The Plantage Muidergracht is a waterway and street that marks the southeastern boundary of the Plantage district. It runs as a canal from the Nieuwe Keizersgracht before turning northeast to parallel the Sarphatistraat, eventually skirting the edge of the Artis zoo. Unlike the dense, narrow grids found elsewhere in Amsterdam, this area was originally laid out in the late seventeenth century as a zone for pleasure gardens and orchards.
