The Gornergrat Railway station in Zermatt sits directly across from the main village train station, identified by tracks designed for the Abt cogwheel system that powers its steep ascent. Opened in August eighteen ninety-eight, this line was the first fully electric rack railway in Switzerland. It climbs nearly fifteen hundred meters in thirty-three minutes, reaching a summit elevation of three thousand eighty-nine meters.
