Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral is built from coral stone and features a barrel-vaulted roof that rises above the surrounding alleys of Stone Town. Its design blends Gothic arches with Islamic architectural motifs, a combination that distinguishes it from other buildings in the neighborhood. The cathedral was constructed between eighteen seventy-three and eighteen seventy-nine under the direction of Bishop Edward Steere, who intended the building to mark the end of the East African slave trade.
