Old British Consulate

The Old British Consulate is a three-storey, whitewashed building situated on the Stone Town waterfront. Established in eighteen forty-one, it served as the base for the Honourable East India Company’s agent and the first British consul, Captain Atkins Hamerton. During the mid-nineteenth century, the consulate functioned as a central point for British interests in East Africa and a frequent meeting place for explorers like Richard Burton, John Hanning Speke, and David Livingstone, all of whom passed through its doors while preparing for or returning from expeditions into the continent's interior.
