Darajani Bazaar, the primary market of Stone Town, is identifiable by its whitewashed stone walls and an ornate, sprawling roof made of corrugated iron. Built in nineteen oh four for Sultan Ali bin Hamud, the structure was financed to serve as the city's commercial hub. The name Darajani translates to on the bridge, reflecting the market’s original location along a waterway that once separated the historic settlement of Stone Town from the neighboring area of Ng'ambo.
