Emerson on Hurumzi is distinguished by its height, reaching eighty feet above the narrow alleys of Stone Town. Built in the eighteen seventies, this mansion was originally the home of Sir Tharia Topan, a merchant who served as the principal financial advisor to Sultan Bargash and held the position of head of customs. The building is known for the rooftop tea house restaurant that crowns the structure, which may have served as an observation post for Topan to monitor his ships arriving at the nearby port.
