The Hamamni Persian Baths are recognizable by their distinct series of domed roofs, which feature small, star-shaped apertures designed to filter sunlight into the chambers below. Constructed between eighteen seventy and eighteen eighty-eight for Sultan Barghash bin Said, this complex served as the first public bathhouse in Zanzibar. The name Hamamni simply translates to the place of the baths.
