The Old Fort, or Ngome Kongwe, is a square of high, brown stone walls topped with notched battlements that dominate the seafront of Stone Town. Built between sixteen ninety-eight and seventeen hundred one by Omani Arabs, it stands on the site of a former Portuguese church dating from the late sixteenth century. You can still find remnants of that original church masonry within the fort's central courtyard.
