The Shia Ithnaasheri Mosque in Kiponda, also known as the Juni Masjid, occupies a distinct place in history as the first Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri mosque in the world. Established in eighteen eighty-one, the mosque emerged after a group of Khoja families in Zanzibar left the mainstream Ismailia community to adhere to the Twelver Shia faith. These founders, including Haji Dewji Jamal and Allarakhia Walli, pooled eight thousand rupees collected from donors in Mumbai to construct the building.
