The Guildhall

The Guildhall sits on the south side of Market Hill, distinguished by its restrained Neo-Georgian design. Completed in nineteen thirty-nine, the structure stands on a site with a long, layered history. Before this building rose, the land held a medieval house confiscated by King Henry the Third in twelve twenty-four for use as a town gaol, as well as an old synagogue that later became a tollbooth for market traders.
