Trinity College is defined by its Great Court, a massive enclosed courtyard that remains the largest of its kind in Europe. Founded by King Henry the Eighth in fifteen forty-six, the college brought together two older institutions, King's Hall and Michaelhouse, into a single royal foundation. The college is marked by the Great Gate, which houses a clock that strikes the hour twice—once for Trinity and once for St John's College next door.
