Magdalene Bridge

Magdalene Bridge is a single-span cast-iron structure recognizable by its decorative iron railings and its location directly adjacent to Magdalene College. Built in eighteen twenty-three, it replaced a stone bridge constructed in seventeen fifty-four by James Essex. The site itself has hosted a river crossing since the Roman era, serving as a vital link for trade and armies. This crossing point is historically significant as the location of the bridge that gave the city of Cambridge its original name.
