Albert Square is defined by the imposing Victorian Gothic silhouette of the Manchester Town Hall, which occupies its eastern side. Laid out between eighteen sixty-three and eighteen sixty-seven, the square was created specifically to provide a site for a memorial to Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria. To clear space for this project, more than one hundred existing buildings, including warehouses and a coffee-roasting works, were demolished.
