Giant's Basin

Giant’s Basin is a circular, seven-meter-wide stone weir that sits at the center of the Castlefield canal network. Built around seventeen sixty-five by engineer James Brindley, the structure features a distinctive, two-course sloped lip carved from sandstone. It functions as a hydraulic overflow point, carrying excess water from the Bridgewater Canal directly into the River Medlock below.
