Friends' Meeting House

The Friends' Meeting House on Mount Street is defined by its austere classical facade, featuring four tall, unfluted Ionic columns that rise above a rusticated ground floor. Designed by the Quaker architect Richard Lane and completed in eighteen thirty-one, the building was constructed to replace an earlier site as the local congregation grew. Its exterior, inspired by the Temple on the Ilissus in Athens, stands as a rare pre-Victorian survivor in the city center.
