Abraham Lincoln Statue

The bronze figure of Abraham Lincoln stands in Lincoln Square, identifiable by its stooped, thoughtful posture and hands clasped low across the midsection. Sculpted by the American artist George Grey Barnard, the statue presents a version of the sixteenth president that famously struck many contemporary observers as awkward or overly informal. It arrived in Manchester as a gift from Charles Phelps Taft in nineteen eighteen, intended as a symbol of unity following the First World War.
