The Old Wellington

The Old Wellington is a half-timbered structure featuring steep gables and overhanging upper floors, standing as the only surviving Tudor building in Manchester city centre. Originally built in fifteen fifty-two, it began its life not as a pub, but as a draper's shop for the Byrom family. John Byrom, the inventor of a shorthand system and author of the hymn "Christians, awake, salute the happy morn," was born here in sixteen ninety-two.
