Water of Leith Weir

The Water of Leith Weir in Dean Village is defined by its low, stone-built shelf stretching across the riverbed, constructed to divert water into narrow channels known as lades. These stone structures once served a vital role in local industry, forcing the river's flow into mill wheels that powered grain production. At its peak, this gorge supported multiple mills, with the earliest recorded in a charter by King David the First in eleven forty-five.
