St. Andrew Square Garden

St. Andrew Square Garden is defined by the massive, fluted column of the Melville Monument rising at its center. This one hundred and fifty foot tall pillar, modeled after Trajan's Column in Rome, honors Henry Dundas, a politician so powerful in the late eighteenth century that he held the nickname the Uncrowned King of Scotland. While today the garden offers a public green space, it was originally created in seventeen seventy as a private enclave for the elite residents and businessmen of the newly built New Town.
