North Rotunda

The North Rotunda is a circular red brick building on Tunnel Street, identifiable by its distinct drum shape and its role as a pair to the South Rotunda across the River Clyde. Built between eighteen ninety and eighteen ninety-six by the Glasgow Harbour Tunnel Company, the structure was designed by architects Simpson and Wilson. It once housed hydraulic lifts manufactured by the Otis Elevator Company of New York, which lowered horse-drawn carts and pedestrians twenty-four meters down to tunnels running beneath the riverbed.
