Broomielaw

The Broomielaw is a long, riverside street running parallel to the north bank of the River Clyde, identifiable by its expansive view across to Tradeston and the modern architecture of the International Financial Services District. Originally part of the lands of Blythswood, the area took its name from a croft where broom shrubs once grew along the water. In sixteen eighty-eight, merchant Walter Gibson financed the city’s first quay here, transforming a quiet meadow into the site of Glasgow’s earliest connection to the sea.
