The Gallery of Modern Art, or GoMA, is distinguished by its grand neoclassical facade in Royal Exchange Square, featuring a row of imposing Corinthian columns and a prominent clock tower. Originally constructed in seventeen seventy-eight as a townhouse for William Cunninghame, a wealthy merchant whose fortune was tied to the tobacco and slave trades, the building has undergone several transformations. It served as the Royal Bank of Scotland and later the Royal Exchange, which prompted extensive architectural additions by David Hamilton between eighteen twenty-seven and eighteen thirty-two, including the iconic temple-style frontage.
