The Britannia Panopticon on the Trongate is recognizable by its four-story Italianate façade, which features carved swags of fruit and flowers, arched windows, and a set of stone putti cherubs perched above. Originally built in eighteen fifty-seven as a speculative warehouse, it was converted into a music hall that opened on Christmas Day eighteen fifty-nine. It stands as the oldest surviving music hall in the world, once capable of holding fifteen hundred people who came to see variety acts and dancing girls.
