The Glasgow City Chambers dominates the eastern side of George Square with a grand, imposing facade of Victorian stone. Crowning the building’s peak stands a figure of Truth, which locals often call Glasgow’s Statue of Liberty because of its physical resemblance to the monument in New York Harbor. When the foundation stone was laid on October sixth, eighteen eighty-three, six hundred thousand people gathered in the square to watch a procession of tradesmen and masons, marking the city's immense pride in its new municipal headquarters.
