St Andrew's in the Square

St Andrew's in the Square is a large, classical church that anchors the center of its namesake public square with a prominent, pillared portico. Constructed between seventeen thirty-nine and seventeen fifty-six, it was the first Presbyterian church built in Glasgow after the Reformation. Local tobacco merchants commissioned the building to project their wealth and status, modeling the design after St Martin-in-the-Fields in London.
