South Portland St Suspension Bridge

The South Portland Street Suspension Bridge is marked by its yellow-brown sandstone towers, designed as Grecian-style triumphal arches with fluted Ionic columns. Completed in eighteen fifty-three, this wrought-iron pedestrian bridge was the first structure built specifically for foot traffic to cross the River Clyde. It was commissioned by the heritors of the Gorbals to replace an earlier, temporary wooden crossing that had fallen into disrepair.
