AK RR Engine No. 1

Alaska Railroad Engine Number 1 sits on a permanent pedestal in front of the railroad depot. This steam locomotive, a Davenport built in nineteen oh seven, began its working life as engine number eight hundred two for the Isthmian Canal Commission during the construction of the Panama Canal. In nineteen seventeen, the machine arrived in Alaska and was renumbered as engine number six to work on local construction projects.
