Federal Building

The Federal Building at Fourth Avenue and F Street is a cast-in-place, reinforced concrete structure defined by its clean, utilitarian lines, a style often called New Deal Concrete. Constructed in stages between nineteen thirty-nine and nineteen forty-one, it was the first large federal building in Anchorage, built on a site originally designated for a Federal Reserve Bank in nineteen fifteen. Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who became famous for his rustic National Park lodges, designed this building to project the authority of the federal government in the territory of Alaska.
