The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts occupies a city block between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, distinguished by a bold, flower-patterned carpet and a dramatic ceiling of green and gold fins inside the Atwood Concert Hall. Opened in nineteen eighty-eight, the building was a major component of Project Eighty, a series of public works projects funded by Alaska’s oil wealth. Its construction replaced an earlier venue known as the Sydney Laurence Auditorium, which was razed to make way for the new facility.
