The Sullivan Arena is marked by four distinct cylindrical towers at its corners, a signature architectural detail of the building that opened in nineteen eighty-three. Known locally as "The Sully," this complex was the primary project of a municipal modernization program known as Project Eighties, funded during a construction boom spurred by Trans-Alaska Pipeline revenues. It was named for George M. Sullivan, who served as the mayor of Anchorage during its development.
