Anchorage Depot

The Anchorage Depot sits at four hundred eleven West First Avenue, easily identified by its long, flat-roofed concrete facade and the Moderne architectural style that defined its construction during the early nineteen forties. Built to replace earlier wooden structures, the building was completed in nineteen forty-two, just as military activity during the Second World War turned the Alaska Railroad into a vital logistics engine for the territory. It is a three-story structure that was later expanded in nineteen forty-eight, and its durable concrete and steel design allowed it to survive the nineteen sixty-four earthquake with only minor damage.
