The San Diego Convention Center is defined by the Sails Pavilion, a sprawling rooftop structure of Teflon-coated fiberglass that mimics the look of ship sails. Designed by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson, the facility opened in November nineteen eighty-nine as a centerpiece of downtown redevelopment. Its exterior is marked by concrete gantry supports and a series of barrel-vaulted glass skylights that run the length of its corridors to bring in natural light.
