The Horton Grand Hotel features an ornate Italianate Victorian facade and wrought iron balconies. It is a construction of two separate nineteenth-century hotels combined into one. Originally located elsewhere in downtown San Diego, the Grand Hotel and the Brooklyn-Kahle Saddlery Hotel faced demolition in the late nineteen seventies to make room for a shopping center. Developer Dan Pearson oversaw a project to dismantle both structures brick by brick, cataloging each piece until their reassembly at this site on Island Avenue in nineteen eighty-six.
