The Tivoli Bar and Grill stands on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Island Avenue, identified by its hand-painted sign declaring an eighteen eighty-one founding date. Alonzo Horton, the developer who laid out much of downtown San Diego, originally built the structure in eighteen sixty-four as the Walker House. It functioned as a boarding house, feed store, and blacksmith shop before becoming a saloon in the eighteen eighties.
